Description:
Learn creative ways to use ink dyes, gel mediums, gel glazes, embossing compound, crackle, pigments, waxes, and stencils. Rather than completing a single project we will be making a sampler, focusing on learning techniques for using a variety of artist grade products. Let this class be a springboard for your creativity as we mix and match to create texture and color. We will be working with: Ink Dyes, Gel Glazes, Gel mediums, Opulence, Crackle, Wood texture, Pure Color, Pure Color with various mediums; paint, gels, varnish, wood filler.

Description:
Each gourd available for student use has the picture sketched and placed to aid in their selection. Instructions will be given for their information on transferring designs and pictures on a gourd. The face and head-dress are painted and given additional touches with puff paint, silver and metallic paints. A shading technique will be taught using chalks. Feathers, leather and beads will be added for additional embellishments. A detailed handout with a sketch of the project will be available.

Description:
Come and join in the fun and paint a beautiful old fashion Santa’s face on a large egg gourd. You will learn basic simple techniques to use to create a detailed look without a lot of hassle.

Students will create a baby sea turtle animal sculpture using parts and pieces of gourds. Students will learn a variety of dying and painting techniques and will be introduced to using epoxy clay.

FR9 – Spindle Santa

Description:
We will be sculpting with epoxy clay. The face will start with a push mold from my original sculpted face and add details. The gourd is attached to an antique spindle. Santa’s beard wraps around the spindle.
Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate level for both sculpting and painting.
Instructor Supply: Teacher will provide paints to complete the Santa. Instructor will have a few extra brushes and tools available to loan
Student Supply: Brushes: #4 round, 10/0 liner, 272 Dome Round M, S(or similar for dry brushing), 1/4” and 3/8” angular brushes or flat in #6, 8. Sculpting tools: needle tool and Style Stix in cone shape. Water bin or cup, palette paper, usual painting supplies.

FR10 – Art Doll on Cut Gourd Piece

Description:
Students will select a pre-cut gourd shape. Each cut piece has been sprayed with a sealant to protect the environment. A kit is provided which includes the trims, beads, face cabochon and copper edging material. A finish will be applied using dyes and embossing stamped designs. While drying students will finish the face cabochons with chalks, paints and details. The face will be applied and then the fun begins. The design with trims and beads is free-hand and detailed instructions will be given on application. After all the detail work is done, suede will be applied to the back and copper foiling will be applied to the edges. A detailed handout is available to each student and additional face cabochons will be available for purchase.

Student Supply: Needle awl. The dyes will be stain so you may want to bring rubber gloves and an apron.

Description:
Now you know what to do with those warty gourds! Create an adorable frog holding a fishing pole in hand, while dangling his legs over a rock or ledge. This is the frog that was published in my book “Gourds Too Cute.”

Learn to make beaded braids ideal for coiling rims or hanging a small gourd upon as a necklace. Class includes learning round braiding technique, adding beads as you go, attaching end caps/clasp and adding a decorative gourd shaped pendant or ready to decorate mini gourd. Copy of the new 88 page book Complete Guide to Kumihimo on a Braiding Loom included.

Using a penguin gourd, students will learn sculpting and layered techniques to make the Indian Maiden look 3 dimensional. Secured on a wooden or Styrofoam base, the maiden will have a sculpted face with a fabric and feather headdress and skirt, plus a woven sling for holding wood.

You will be using an epoxy clay to sculpt a snowman face and hat details to the gourd. He is mounted on a spool with a clay scarf. You will learn to build facial features, painting and antiquing techniques.

Description:
Students are provided with prepared patterned mini gourds from which to create a unique wood burned necklace. Students are shown techniques in fine line drawing and shading in creating this piece of gourd jewelry. Generous amounts of demonstrations and verbal encouragements are provided to the student via one-on-one experiences. Detailed work is required but the techniques and procedures in this class are easy to learn and are usable in crafting larger gourds.
Skill Level: From novice to advanced in wood burning on gourds.
Student Supply: Any brand of wood burning units plus wood burning pens that have a tip similar to that of either a Detail Master 5-A or 10-A.

Description:
Students will learn to use the knotless netting technique to create a unique rim on a gourd bowl. This finishing technique lends itself well to a wide variety of finished gourd bowl or vessel projects. We will also discuss other uses for the knotless netting stitch on gourds.

Description:
Students will learn basic use of a rotary tool, how to apply leather dye and a wax resist technique. After transferring the design to the gourd, part of the hard outer shell will be removed using a rotary tool. The floral (or leaf) pattern will then be incised. The gourd will be finished with leather dye and alcohol inks

The frosty snowman gourd is a large martin house gourd. The gourd is cut out and cleaned where a tree will be placed. The student will do some basic cutting. Everyone will learn some basic painting with shading. This is also a lighted lamp.

Description:
4th to 6th graders, ages 10-13. I will include younger and older participates if you wish. This project will give self esteem to the student in their accomplishment in the creation of the finished object and participation in the competitive races.
Instructor provides: Gourd fragments, paint, brushes, hot glue guns and glue sticks. Wooden pine platform wedges with wheels. Weights, cutting instruments, and clean up supplies. Race Track

Learn how to create clay heads and faces out of clay. These beautifully crafted 3 dimensional heads or faces can be added to or done directly to gourds. You can use this technique to make objects from old world Santa’s to beautiful dolls. We will be crafting a 3 dimensional Santa head with acrylic eyes, which can be added to a body crafted from a gourd.

Description:
This gourdeous witch is sculpted using epoxy clay. You will learn to build the facial features and the hat. She has natural wool hair that will be glued in place after painting. After the head is completed she is attached to a 9” wood candlestick (not provided) that is painted for her body.

SA13 – Hawaiian Quilt Pattern on a Gourd

Description:
Students will burn Hawaiian quilt patterns on to a prepared cannon ball gourd. Five patterns are provided for each gourd project. Students chose any pattern to start with to begin their projects. Techniques in fine line burning and shading are demonstrated as the class progresses. Students who have advanced wood burning experiences may continue with of the remaining patterns. All are expected to complete their projects at home due to class time limitations. The techniques are not difficult to learn and are useful in crafting other types of gourd projects. Students are provided with hand out sheets that they can take home for future use.
Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced wood burning skills.
Student Supply: Any brand of wood burning unit with a pen tip similar to that of a Detail Master 5-A or 10-A.

Description:
The snowman bowl is a large round gourd in which snowman with scarves circle the top of the bowl. In this class we will do some measuring to obtain that perfect bowl, basic cutting, cleaning and basic painting with shading.
Student Supply: For this class please bring basic brushes. (1/4 inch angle, l/2 inch angle, and a liner) All other supplies to complete your project will be provided.

SA16 – Twisted Cord Gourd

Description:
Students will be given directions on marking and cutting gourds. For convenience, the gourds are pre-cut before class for the students. The gourd is finished on the inside with a simple decoupage technique using tissue paper. It is then antiqued to give subtle definition. Color is added to the outside with a water soluble oil pastel that adds color but still lets the markings on the gourd show through. A finish will be applied to seal the outside. A “new” technique will be used to mark and space holes for the addition of the twisted cord. Students will make their own twisted cord and add it to the cut surface of the gourd along with a beaded or fringe trim. For safety, a sealed finish is added to the inside of the cut gourds to protect the students.

Student Supply: All supplies are furnished but if students are partial to a specific color they will need to bring 3 types of yarn, fifteen yards each and at least 18” of beaded trim.

Description:
Students will learn to fit, cut and attach a decorative piece of gourd to their base gourd. They will then use a basic wood burning technique to complete the design. The leaves will then be colored with watercolors.

Description:
Paint like a master, learn the technique of using colored pencils to create beautiful works of art. You will draw/paint a beautiful cardinal or blue bird on a large egg gourd and receive a stand to display your rich in detail work of art.
Instructor Supply: Cleaned gourd, set of Prisma colored pencils, pattern packet with easy to follow instructions.

Description:
Students will first learn to lay-out an intricate design on their gourd. Next a patina finish will be applied to the gourd. The design will be finished with the addition of a raised pattern to create a unique gourd bowl.

Student Supply: brushes: liner, 5/8 side angle brush, 3 round your favorite supplemental paint materials such as wet palette, water tray, additional brushes, etc. Brushes may be purchased at class if desired

The balance of the class fee will be paid to the instructor at the beginning of each class. For example, the class fee for Class 1 is listed as $54. To register for it, send $7 to Doug Durso by April 27, and pay Mary Segreto $47 at the beginning of the class.

For each workshop you pre-register for, you will receive five “Gourd Dollars” which can be spent at the Gourd Auction on Saturday evening. Registrations postmarked after April 27 are not eligible for show passes or “Gourd Dollars”. Register early before classes fill up!!

Class confirmations and coupons will be sent the first week in May. Gourd Dollars will be available at registration desk at the time of the show.

GOURD CAR DERBY

GOURD DERBY HAS BEEN CANCELED

In addition to our traditional workshops, Fred Merida will do Gourd Car workshop. On Saturday morning, kids will build a race car using a race car platform and gourds. After a lunch break, they will paint them.

At 3:00 Saturday afternoon, there will be a Gourd Car Derby on a real race track for the completed cars. Prizes will be awarded for the best-looking and fastest cars. There is no age limit for participants. Conduct a workshop in a class room setting, designing, sculpturing and fabricating and painting a creation made of gourds that will be within the parameters of a platform car that can be raced or showed as an art object. This will be sculpture fabrication, construction, using natural material indigenous to the region, GOURDS. We will address items of weight, gravity, air dynamics, friction, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. The created object is not limited to a preconceived automobile design; the object may be constructed in a form of an animal, flower, fish, or person, as well as a mechanical form. The sculpture created not exceeding 3” x 5” x 7”   to fit on a 1 ¾” x 7” wedge with wheels and not exceeding 7 ounces in weight. Size and weight are the only limitations.

The students will fabricate, finish, paint the cars and competitively race their cars on an 80 foot long race track at 3 PM EVENT Saturday on the Festival Grounds.

The class will start at 9 AM sharp, Saturday, and we will finish the cars for racing by 3PM. Students should bring a bag lunch and drink.
