Learn to fit and glue a false bottom on a gourd to make it stand straight, and then create an ultra fine finish. Add interest and texture with an embossed design, all using non toxic products. FRAM04-- Crocheting on

Students will select a pre-cut gourd or gourd piece which has been cleaned and sprayed for their protection. The finish on the exterior will be a simple wax finish that is applied and buffed. Directions will be given in the handout for finishing the interior after class to allow students time for the crochet technique. They will learn to space and pierce the gourd around the rim for stitching. After the rim is pierced, the rim trim will be attached and the crocheted edge will be added. While there are many options available for the rim cover and crochet "thread", leather fringe and black cording will be used. A handout with directions and picture will be given to each student Number Students: min 1, max:10 Skill Level: All, but you must know basic crochet skills...chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet...other stitches will be used if the student is familiar with them. Students are provided with a patterned mini-gourd from which to create a unique woodburned necklace. They are shown techniques in fine line drawing and shading to create this piece of gourd jewelry. Generous amounts of demonstration and verbal encouragement are provided to the student via one-on-one experiences. Detailed work is required, but the techniques and procedures in this class are easy to learn and usable in crafting larger gourds. FRPM03 -- Gourd Doll

The small gourd will be finished with leather cream and buffed to a sheen. The face cab will be finished with Pearl-X for a unique look. A simple knotless netting technique using waxed linen will be taught for the "doll body". At the bottom of the body, a beaded tassel will be attached. Wire and beads will be used for the arms with small hand charms attached for a distinguished flair. The necklace will be sprayed at this point to protect the finish on the face. Yarn hair and satin cording will be attached to the inserted eye-pin at the top. A handout with directions and picture will be given to each student. The handout will include websites to order additional hand charms. Each student will receive a kit containing the following supplies: Small face cabochon, a pair of hand charms, beads, wire, pre-made tassel, waxed linen cord, satin cord and a variety of yarns to select from for the hair. SAPM02 -- African Tribal

Students will be using dyes and alcohol to apply the finish on the gourd. A tribal face cab will be finished with chalks or Pearl-X and applied to the gourd along with Tyvek and feather trim. An appropriate stone or bead embellishment will be attached with copper wire to the suede wrap with an optional stamped image. The gourd will then be inserted into a pre-made stand that is covered with a leopard-fur print. A finishing spray will be the final touch. The banana gourds are pre-cut and sprayed to eliminate gourd dust. A handout with directions and picture will be given to each student. Students will burn Hawaiian quilt patterns on a pre-marked cannonball gourd. Five different patterns are provided for each gourd project. Students choose any pattern to begin their projects. Techniques in fine line drawing and shading are demonstrated as the class progresses. Students who have advanced woodburning experience may continue with the remaining patterns. All are expected to finish projects at home due to class time restrictions. The techniques are not hard to learn and are useful in crafting other types of gourd projects. Students will receive materials to take home that are useful in crafting activities. In this class you will choose from a variety of gourds that have been cleaned and sanded for you. You will choose colors of dye that will enhance your décor. After you have added your colors to your gourd, you will choose a stencil or design that you prefer and using a woodburner, you will burn it into the gourd. I will have butterfly, gecko and dragonfly patterns to use. From this point on we will decide on the best way for you to finish your gourd. Some additives must dry 24 hours before you can continue.
